Rafa Benitez – Saint or Sinner?

Well . . . .Would YOU sack him?

Liverpool FC is and always has been my passion. Liverpool was my home, my family all come from places like Speke, Croxteth, Aintree and Anfield. Liverpool, the city and Liverpool Football club is simply in my blood. It is not a matter of choice, no more so than for a Mancunian, a Geordie or a Cockney.

We are born to support the team that we support. No questions asked.

So, as you can imagine, the current plight of LFC is one that is close to . . . . no, right inside . . my heart.

So many words are being written about Liverpool by journalists. So many words are being spoken by football ‘pundits’. The experts who are trundled out in front of a camera to enlighten us with their wisdom.

And yet, how many of those words are knowledgeable ones? How many are balanced, thoughtful commentaries on what is an emotive subject?

According to The News of The World (and no doubt other publications too) 73% of Liverpool supporters want Benitez gone, with Guus Hiddink or The Special One being listed as the fans favourite to replace ‘Raffa the Gaffer’

Is that really true?

I wonder.

Let me propose some ‘balanced’ views and judgements. Those of a Scouser. Someone who doesn’t just have a vested, financial interest by way of selling more newspapers or attracting more viewers but someone who simply and honestly cares!

My first proposal is that whenever things go wrong, whether in a business or a relationship or indeed, a football club, it is far too simplistic to lay the blame on one person.

This Government is in a mess and we all (understandably) blame Gordon Brown and let’s face it, that’s easy because the man is not an endearing person. He is, generally, not a personality that we warm to or easily like.

But are the faults in our country (and I say this as a lifelong Tory) really all down to one man, or even to one Government?

I don’t think so. We are all to blame. It is OUR country and WE have helped to make a mess of it.

So, does the same apply to LFC?

Rafa has never been likable. He has never had an endearing personality. He comes across as arrogant, aloof, detached, insular and lacking in feeling or genuine human emotion, except those associated with self interest.

And yet, are they reasons to sack him?

Should he be sacked and ridiculed and mocked and pilloried just because we don’t warm to his ‘persona’ ?

His peers all, to a man, claim that he is one of the best coaches in world football.

He has won La Liga, the Uefa cup, the champions league, the FA cup, European super cup, charity shield and been a losing finalist in the league cup and the champions league.

Not a bad record and certainly not one that can be matched by many.

Not Hiddink

Not ‘The Special One’

Not Wenger

Only a handful of managers in world football can claim greater success.

And before you get the impression that I am a fan of Benitez, let me assure you, I am not. But neither am I a knee jerk idiot who seeks the sensationalism that comes with sacking a high profile manager at a high profile, world renowned club.

Consider the facts.

If LFC sack Rafa, who would replace him?

What funds would that person demand?

What would the management fallout costs be of replacing one manager and staff with a whole new entourage?

Tens of Millions.

If Rafa goes, which players would go with him?

Torres? Reina? Gerrard?

Ok, some people (and I have a lot of sympathy with this view) argue that for Torres, Gerrard, Mascherano and Reina, Liverpool could get £120 million.

At an average of £10 million per player, Liverpool could buy a whole team, with a handful of the present squad as reserves / squad players (Carragher, Kuyt, Lucas, Aquilani, Riera, Rodriguez)

Indeed, sell a few of those and the funds available could rise to £150 million plus and with that, a whole new team could be assembled.

So, back to the original question.

Have you watched Liverpool play recently?

Have you seen the apathy of several players? (yes, I know it is the manager’s job to motivate them and perhaps that is the one real weakness of Benitez) and what about their technical skills?

They train and train and train and yet, their first touch and passing ability is so often poor and their decision making and choices on the ball are poor too.

Does Benitez control that? Kuyt hits the post with a poor header with the goal virtually at his mercy. Is that down to Rafa?

I would suggest that Rafa is going through a bad spell but his players (and they are HIS players, remember) are doing even worse, in my humble view.

Just go back and read Rafa’s trophy list and look at his accomplishments and ask yourself “Who is out there that is better than Rafa?”

Perhaps there is better available.

Perhaps that better manager will be able to get more from the present squad than Rafa

Perhaps that better manager will be given £100 million from the magic money tree in Hicks and Gillette’s back gardens

Perhaps that better manager will win us the title that we have coveted so much for 20 years

Aaahhhhh . . .there we have it.

You see, in the past 10 years we have won every trophy that is open to us, except for 2. One is the world club championship, where refereeing errors cost us dearly and the other is the Premier League Title.

Quite rightly, we covet the latter.

No, we don’t have a right to it. But we have an expectation of it. Our expectation is based on where we have come from.

We are not (and forgive me now, please) Bolton, or West ham, or Sunderland or Birmingham or a host of other clubs who have no history or pedigree.

We, like manchester Utd, Arsenal, Leeds (yes, even given where they currently are) or Chelsea (the lottery winning Johnny-come-latelys) are a team who have, in recent times, won the championship.

Won it, in fact, consistently over 4 consecutive decades.

THAT is the problem with Rafa – or at least the problem that he faces.

Expectation.

Not achievement.

His achievements have been fine but he has failed to deliver on an expectation . . a dream . . a legacy.

He follows Shankley, Paisley, Fagan, Moran, Dalglish . . . . . they cannot be followed.

Someday soon, someone is going to have to follow Ferguson and Wenger.

Will they be able to?

Of course not.

Those two are legends.

And so, the replacement managers at manchester Utd and Arsenal will suffer the same fate.

It is not that they will be inadequate failures, any more than Benitez is, it will simply be down to it being impossible to follow legends AND deliver the fan’s dreams and expectations.

What I am sure of, therefore, is that the debate on sacking Rafa is a much more complex one than the pundits are able to grasp.

Pundits lack one vital quality. One key weapon in their armoury.

They are NOT supporters

And those who are, like Ian St John, are ex players from the glory years and so, they are biased in favour of an era and a way of doing things that has simply gone away now.

We have to live in the times we are in and we have to judge ourselves in the times we are in.

It is time now to stop judging against the past.

It is time to stop judging on dreams and expectations.

Judge on reality and on achievement.

Yes, we are sad. We are hurting. We are jealous (yes, jealous of CFC, MUFC, AFC) and that jealousy is killing us.

They have the one that was once ours. The one we love and adore. They are married to the love of our lives and we are eaten up by it. We have hatred in our hearts because of it. We seek revenge and retribution and scapegoats for it.

For we miss she who was closest to our hearts and our souls.

And she is called . . . .

Success.

Amen.

The winningest team of the past decade is in an ideal position: It will be playing in front of what promises to be a thunderous Lucas Oil Stadium sellout crowd, one win away from a second Super Bowl appearance in the past four seasons. It’s time for Peyton Manning and his experienced teammates to deliver.

Even though 18 players on the active roster are in the midst of their first postseason run, the pressure of the moment shouldn’t be too great. The core leadership — Manning, center Jeff Saturday, wide receiver Reggie Wayne, tight end Dallas Clark, linebacker Gary Brackett and defensive ends Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis — has been here before.

Can the Colts finish off the Jets, something they refused to do on Dec. 27? That day, coach Jim Caldwell enraged the fan base by pulling the starters in the third quarter of what disintegrated into a 29-15 loss. The decision cost the team a chance at perfection.

The Jets are the latest Cinderella team to challenge for a Super Bowl berth. They needed that comeback win over the Colts to even qualify for the playoffs. Once in, they’ve gone on the road and imposed their blue-collar will on the Bengals and Chargers.

The Bottom Line
The Colts could have KO’d the Jets in December, but declined. Now they’ve got to close the deal with a trip to Super Bowl 44 on the line. The Jets are a brass-knuckles bunch and the warm-and-fuzzy story among the NFL’s Final Four. But they aren’t likely to score enough to keep up with Manning. With so much on the line, Manning will show why he’s the league’s MVP.

Minnesota Vikings Vs New Orleans Saints Live Streaming NFL Playoff & Week 20 Sunday Football on January 24

NFC CHAMPIONSHIP: Minnesota Vikings Vs New Orleans Saints Live Streaming NFL Playoff Football at 6:00 PM (ET),Date: Sunday, January 24, 2010.Location: Superdome.TV: FOX. Your Today’s expense would be $0.04 for this Live coverage.

The quarterbacks are as good as it gets. Minnesota’s Brett Favre is remarkably having one of the best seasons of his Hall of Fame career, and he played one of his best games Sunday, throwing four touchdown passes in a 34-3 rout of the Dallas Cowboys.

But Favre didn’t come out of retirement again to settle for the NFC Championship Game. It’s Super Bowl or bust for the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards and passing touchdowns, who has not been back to the Super Bowl since losing to Denver 12 years ago.

New Orleans’ Drew Brees, meanwhile, is trying to get to his first Super Bowl and, in the process, break into that elite stratosphere of quarterbacks. Brees, who turned 31 last week, set the NFL record for completion percentage in a season, and he became the second quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards in four consecutive seasons (joining Peyton Manning).

Last year, Brees was the second QB ever to throw for 5,000 in a season. But he knows that he’ll ultimately be judged by how he performs in games like these.

As it should be, the NFC title will be decided by a showdown between the two best teams. The Saints (14-3) and Vikings (13-4) were dominant for much of the season before a couple of mini-slumps in December. And both of them reached their peak last week in the divisional round of the NFC playoffs, winning by the same margin — 31 points.

This should be the toughest matchup to date for both teams. Each team can score points. The Saints offense, which led the league in points scored, is thrilling to watch and creates matchup nightmares for defenses because it is so deep and versatile. The Vikings offense is even more balanced, though, with Favre playing as well as ever while defenses continue to focus on stopping All-Pro tailback Adrian Peterson.

The Vikings have a fearsome defensive front, and the Saints have an aggressive, opportunistic defense. And both teams are built to take advantage of the other’s biggest weakness (for the Saints, it’s their porous run defense; for the Vikings, it’s their shaky play at safety). There will be no free rides into the Super Bowl.

Saints safety Darren Sharper will provide a fascinating subplot for several reasons. For one, he’s dying to make his former team pay for giving up on him last offseason, where he lingered in free agency before settling on a one-year bargain deal in New Orleans.

He also has a longtime personal relationship with Favre, who was his teammate in Green Bay for eight years before they became rivals when Sharper went to Minnesota. And like Favre, Sharper is trying to get back to the Super Bowl for the first time in 12 years as he heads toward the twilight of his career.

It would be shocking if Sharper didn’t have a major impact on how this game plays out. He has been an incredible playmaker for the Saints this year, helping to lead their drastic culture change on defense. He intercepted nine passes with three touchdown returns and an NFL record 376 interception return yards this season, then added a fumble recovery last week against Arizona (plus an interception that was called back by a late hit).

Sharper does like to gamble, though, and Favre knows him as well as anybody, so they’ll try to pick on each other.

The Vikings, meanwhile, could really use Sharper on their side in this game. Their safeties have not stepped up consistently in Sharper’s absence, and now they’re going against arguably the league’s most dangerous passing offense.

The Bottom Line
A painfully long drought will end for one of these tortured franchises. The Vikings went to four Super Bowls in the 1960s and 1970s and lost all four of them. They haven’t been back in 33 years. But they have nothing on the Saints, who have never reached a Super Bowl in 43 years — one of five teams left on that list. In fact, this will be the first time New Orleans has ever been host to an NFC championship game. Expect a frenzied Superdome crowd that will do all it can to will the Saints to victory.

So, How could you miss Minnesota Vikings Vs New Orleans Saints exciting NFC CHAMPIONSHIP Playoff Football Match. Watch this battle today at 6:40PM(ET) on your PC/Laptop.

Pac-10 football: The top NFL Draft prospects for 2010

, filed under NFL Online; Comments Off.

Semi-silly as this exercise is, even sillier would be projecting specific rounds for the top Pac-10 nfl draft prospects, beyond the one guy we know is going in the first round and, most likely, in the first few picks of the first round: USC safety Taylor Mays.

Usually, I have no problem looking silly, but projecting rounds is going too far even for me. Instead, I’ll try to contain the potential for silliness by simply listing my top-15 NFL Draft prospects.

Two points-of-order:

* I’m including the top rising juniors(*).

* This is not a projection of the best players in the conference in the ‘09. It’s a projection of the best draft prospects. (There’s often a slight difference between college production and pro potential.)

In other words: If all of next season’s juniors and seniors were available in the April ‘10 draft, these would be the first 15 picks.

Several big names were excluded, like LeGarrette Blount, Toby Gerhart, Joe McKnight and Jake Locker. Clearly, they could develop into top prospects — they just aren’t there yet.

Again, I’m taking dozens of future draft picks from three classes (fifth-, fourth- and third-year players in the 2009 season) and selecting the top 15.

For instance, McKnight could well be a first-day pick in 2011, but that doesn’t mean that right now, he projects as one of the  best nfl draft  prospects for next year.

And obviously, this list will look much different come December.

15. Oregon TE Ed Dickson: Might be the league’s best tight end if it weren’t for that guy in Tucson.

14. USC TB Stafon Johnson: The best prospect of the Trojan TBs until McKnight becomes more consistent and proves he can run between the tackles.

13. USC OT Chris Charles Brown: The best OT prospect in the league not named Mitchell Schwartz (who’s a rising sophomore).

12. ASU LB Dexter Davis: Devils seem to produce a top-tier passing-rushing end/linebacker every few years.

11. USC TE Anthony McCoy: A much better prospect than his ‘08 stats (22 catches/11.6 ypc) would indicate.

10. USC FB Stanley Havili*: Arguably the best pass-catching fullback in the country, and he runs very well for a 225-pounder.

9. USC WR Damian Williams*: Borderline first-day pick. Good size and good hands and good, but not overwhelming, speed.

8. UCLA CB Alterraun Verner: As cornerback prospects, I like both Verner and Oregon’s Walter Thurmond more than Cal’s Syd’Quan Thompson, who’s several inches shorter than both.

7. Oregon CB Walter Thurmond: The best cover corner in the conference and has the size (6-foot) to go on the first day. But how will he run?

6. USC C Kris O’Dowd*: Possibly the top center in the country in ‘09, but that hardly guarantees a spot in the first round. (Alex Mack was the exception.)

5. USC DE Everson Griffen*: Yeah, yeah, I know. He didn’t even start in ‘08 and might not be a consistent impact player next fall. But there’s more than enough raw talent for Griffen to soar up the draft boards and land in the first or second round.

4. Cal TB Jahvid Best*: The best offensive player in the conference but perhaps not the best offensive prospect. Needs to show scouts he can be an every-down back (or something close to an every-down back). Small TBs usually don’t go very high, but the 5-10, 190-pound Best could be an exception because of his speed.

3. UCLA DT Brian Price*: Best interior lineman in the league, and we all know how valuable elite interior linemen are on draft day.

2. Arizona TE Rob Gronkowski*: He’s everything the scouts want in a tight end: Big (6-6, 265), fast, good hands, good routes … Gentlemen, start your salivating.

1. USC S Taylor Mays: The best player in the Pac-10 and possibly the country. Would have been a top-10 pick had he entered the draft this year. Hard to imagine he won’t be a top-five selection next spring.

Watch the Super Bowl Online

, filed under NFL Online; Comments Off.

South Florida is the setting for Super Bowl XLIV at Dolphin Stadium just two weeks after both the AFC’s and NFC’s best battle it out for league bragging rights. I watched the NFC and AFC games online, and I will watch this year’s Super Bowl live from the easy comfort sitting in front of my very own computer.

In fact, since the Super Bowl matches up the AFC winner against the NFC champion, this contest might see a rematch of opponents from the Pro Bowl in the Colts Peyton Manning and the Saints Drew Brees. Both QBs have led their teams to incredible season play with Indianapolis posting a 14-2 record and New Orleans having a stellar year at 13-3. These are the best records in the NFL this past year and may just be pointing the way to a possible Big Game match-up. Sure, there are other teams standing in their way including the Minnesota Vikings who sport a 40-year-old quarterback – Bret Favre – who just had the best season of his legendary career.

Who knows what can happen. The age old adage states that any team can bring their A-game on any day becoming victorious. Look at what the fifth-seeded New York Giants accomplished in 2007. Don’t forget about the sixth-seeded Pittsburgh Steelers who took it all in 2005. There is no telling what the road to Super Bowl XLIV will unfold and which teams will end up at the ultimate game.

I’ll be at the ultimate game sitting somewhere in front of my computer watching the game courtesy of this great software I found. You can use it also. All you need is a high-speed Internet connection and a Windows-based operating system or a Mac.

Then you’ll be all set for the Big Game as well as gaining access to more than 3,500 television stations worldwide viewing lots of movies and other entertainment like news and weather, history and education plus great children’s programming.

Don’t miss the biggest NFL game of the year. Get instant access to the Super Bowl live online at http://watchthesuper-bowlonline.blogspot.com.
